Lynnwood boys basketball team improving

Two seasons ago, the Lynnwood boys basketball team won one game. Last season, the Royals jumped up to four wins. This season, they posted three wins in their first eight games.

Lynnwood (3-6 overall, 1-0 Wesco 3A) is showing improvement, no doubt. Second-year coach Bobby Hinnenkamp is optimistic about his team’s progress, but he knows that there’s more work to be done.

“We’re much more competitive. We’re battling every game,” he said. “(Building the program) is a process. I know it will take some time, and we know that realistically we’re not going to (become) a team that wins every game right away. But at the same time, I feel like we’re going in the right direction. The ultimate goal is to get to the playoffs, and we feel that’s an attainable goal.”

The Royals’ roster features eight seniors, including captains Bryce Milne and Eli Edwards. Ryan Rapanan, Alex Macias and Yoseph Habtemariam also have played key roles.

“Defense has been our calling,” Hinnenkamp said. “The kids pride themselves on their defense, and we emphasize it. Our offense has improved from last year; players are understanding their roles better. We’ve talked with the kids about finishing games. Physically we’re doing what it takes to win games, but we have to learn how to win.”
