The National Lacrosse League held a supplemental draft on Friday of Boston Blazers players after the Blazers announced that they are suspending operations for the 2012 season.
The Washington Stealth added three Boston players to their roster, most notably Jamie Rooney with the eighth overall selection in the first round. The Stealth followed that by selecting forwards Josh Wasson-McQuigge in the second round and Dan Teat in the third round.
Rooney is entering his fifth NLL season. He appeared in all 16 games for the Blazers last season, scoring 15 goals and dishing nine assists. In his career, Rooney has recorded 110 points (57 goals, 53 assists). His best season came in 2008 with the Philadelphia Wings when he tallied a career-high 43 points (20 goals, 23 assists).
“Going into this draft, we were looking for another goal-scorer on the right-hand side of our offense,” Stealth coach Chris Hall said in a press release. “Jamie has shown that he can score goals in this league and he will be a great compliment to Rhys Duch, Jeff Zywicki and Craig Conn on the right side.”
Wasson-McQuigge has appeared in 50 career regular-season games, scoring 46 goals and dishing out 58 assists.
“When given the chance, Josh has shown he has the capability to be a solid player in this league,” Hall said.
Teat announced his retirement before the 2011 season, but scored 20 or more goals in eight of his NLL seasons. The Stealth said that they felt having the rights to an established NLL player was worth the draft pick.
“Dan is one of the greats in our sport,” said Hall. “He’s a proven playoff performer and a big-game player. He adds depth to our roster should we have injuries late in the season. The potential to bring in a guy of his caliber late in the season could be huge for us.”
Next on the offseason schedule for the Stealth is the NLL Entry Draft, which will be held in Toronto on Sept. 21.
