Driver dies after backing into Sunnyside canal

SUNNYSIDE — The Washington State Patrol says a 34-year-old Sunnyside man has died after flipping his car into a canal.

Troopers told the Tri-City Herald that Jose Negrete reportedly was driving early Friday on Emerald Road about three miles west of Sunnyside when he tried to make a U-turn and backed into the canal.

His 1996 Chevy Monte Carlo rolled onto its top in the canal and Negrete drowned.
