Winterhawks stop Silvertips

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Everett Silvertips’ winning ways didn’t last long.
One day after the Tips ended their five-game losing streak, Everett found itself on the losing end again, getting shut out 2-0 Sunday night by the Portland Winterhawks.
Ian Curtis stopped all 23 shots he faced in goal as Portland upended Everett for the second time in the past six days. The Winterhawks also beat the Tips 4-3 in overtime Tuesday in Everett.
Everett has struggled scoring goals in recent weeks, and the Tips continued to struggle Sunday as they were shut out for the third time this season. Everett has scored just 14 goals in its past seven games, scoring three or fewer goals in all seven.
Nino Niederreiter and Brad Ross scored the goals for Portland (21-13-0-1), which has won four of the five meetings between the teams this season.
Thomas Heemskerk made 33 saves in goal for Everett (17-12-2-1).
Everett played without captain Zack Dailey. Dailey suffered a head injury after colliding with referee Graham Skilliter during Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Seattle. Reports Sunday said Dailey’s injury was not serious.
Portland opened the scoring 9 minutes, 12 seconds into the game as Ross set up Niederreiter for the opener. It was the same pair that combined on the overtime game winner on Tuesday.
The Tips were fortunate to survive the period having surrendered just one goal as they managed to kill off a long Portland five-on-three power play.
It remained 1-0 through the second period as neither could find the net. Everett came closest late in the period when Tyler Maxwell rang a shot off the inside of the post.
Portland then got the insurance goal 4:21 into the third period, Ross scoring after Eric Doyle’s shot from the point deflected off a skate.
The Winterhawks ended up outshooting the Tips 17-6 in the third period.
