LYNNWOOD — South Lynnwood Park needs some attention.

A new playground is planned, but that’s just the start, said Sarah Olson, Lynnwood’s deputy parks director. The city is applying for grants with hopes of doing much more.

The park was built in 1978. Since then, not much has changed.

The basketball and tennis courts are “cracked and morphed,” Olson said. The fields get muddy and puddly. There are picnic tables but no shelters.

“It’s a very popular place for pickup soccer games,” she said. “It’s lived its life and needs to be refreshed.”

Kaiser Permanente, which has a clinic nearby, is funding the new playground. That donation, of $260,000, was arranged through The Trust for Public Land.

Altogether, renovations could cost $2.7 million, if the grants come together as planned. The city expects to have more details by the end of the year.

In addition, two cleanup parties have been organized, including one in May that drew more than 100 volunteers. More events are planned, and each brings new feedback for the future.

“There was a great sense from the community that there are other things at this park that could be improved,” Olson said.

Other upcoming events include a summer meals program for children and a “Meet Me at the Park” gathering at 6:30 p.m. July 17 featuring hula hoops, Zumba and games. An open house with an update on the renovations is set for 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday including free food and family-friendly activities.
