DARRINGTON — A Camano Island man died Tuesday night when the pickup truck he was driving crossed the center lane of Highway 530 and collided with an oncoming semi truck that was pulling a tank trailer, the Washington State Patrol said.

The pickup, driven by James R. Shields, 69, was eastbound just after 10 p.m. on Highway 530, about three miles east of Darrington, when it crossed into the westbound lane for an unknown reason, the patrol said in a news release.

The collision caused the semi truck to catch fire, the State Patrol said, but the driver, a 50-year-old Everett man, was not injured.

The accident is under investigation.
