EVERETT — Deivy Florido scattered four hits over eight scoreless inningss to lead the AquaSox to a 8-0 shutout over Eugene on Monday night at Funko Field.
“He threw a good inside fastball, and when he does that it makes his offspeed pitches much more effective,” Everett manager Louis Boyd said. “He’s always had a really good attack mentality and when guys aren’t able to sit on an off-speed pitches due to the inside fastball, he has a lot of success.”
Florido (3-1) set season-highs for innings pitched and strike outs in his best start of the season. The 18-year-old hurled 87 pitches, 61 for strikes and didn’t walk a batter.
“It’s huge,” Boyd said of Florido’s efficient outing. “Especially going into the off day, we’re going to be stacked up in the bullpen heading into the last six games of the year, which is incredibly crucial as a team. We’re just in a great spot to compete.”
The AquaSox are still two games back of Tri-City in the Northwest League North second-half standings after Mason House’s walk-off RBI single lifted the Dust Devils over Boise, 5-4. Everett and Tri-City are jockeying for the final playoff spot in the division, as Spokane is leading the second half after winning the first. League playoff procedures call for the team with the next best record in the second half to claim the second playoff spot if a team wins both halves.
Cade Marlowe recorded three hits and two RBI to lead the AquaSox offense. He’s raised his batting average to .288 after hitting .302 in his last 10 games.
“Not even just lately, ever since the Tri-City series on the road — the first series I was here, he’s been nothing but amazing,” Boyd said. “He plays the game hard and he gets rewarded for it. I have nothing but good things to say about him.”
The AquaSox struck in the first inning on Marlowe’s two-run single. Juan Camacho’s RBI single extended the AquaSox’s lead to 3-0.
Robert Perez Jr. crushed a three-run homer and Camacho plated another run in the third to put the AquaSox up 7-0.
Utah Jones scored on a wild pitch in the fourth to tack on another run and put Everett’s lead at 8-0.
Didier Varger (1-5) was handed the loss after allowing seven runs — four earned — over two innings.
