Chauvin verdict not enough to satisfy justice

White privilege. I couldn’t even get those words out of my head as I read County Executive Dave Somers declare that “justice” had been served in light of Derek Chauvin’s conviction in the murder of George Floyd.
Does Somers understand the plight of African- Americans and other people of color. He seems to be using his position of power to proclaim that the fight for equality is somehow complete. This is an example of why we still have these problems, and why these problems will continue. That’s white privilege.
People who have only experienced the system working, would believe this is the end. That finally America can put it past behind and say” justice is served.”
Well, George Floyd is dead. Daunte Wright is dead. Adam Toledo is dead. Breonna Taylor is dead. Thousands of black and brown Americans continue two face abuse, mistreatment, and injustice at the hands of law enforcement.
Elected officials need to wake up to that reality. I am thankful for this verdict, but the arc of the moral universe is long, and we have only just begun the walk towards justice.
