Below are the candidates for The Herald’s Prep Athlete of the Month for April. They were the winners of the five athlete-of-the-week polls during the month. The balloting for the athlete of the month closes at midnight Sunday.

Kale Hammer | Snohomish | Baseball

Hammer, a sophomore, went 2-for-3 with a home run, triple and three RBI, and also struck out seven batters in three hitless innings of relief as Snohomish beat Archbishop Murphy 7-1 on April 7. He won The Herald’s Prep Athlete of the Week for April 5-11 by claiming 299 of 1,318 (22.7%) votes.

Alex Hristov | Kamiak | Boys soccer

Hristov, a senior, scored two goals in the Knights’ 4-3 victory over Monroe on April 13. He also scored a goal and added an assist in Kamiak’s 3-0 win over Meadowdale on April 16. He won The Herald’s Athlete of the Week poll for April 12-18 by claiming 1,592 of the 4,467 (35.6%) votes.

Makalya Miller | Glacier Peak | Softball

Miller, a senior, went 9-for-9 with four doubles and two home runs on the week to help the Grizzlies earn three victories. On April 28, Miller blasted a walk-off two-run home run and tossed a shutout, striking out 12, in the circle as Glacier Peak beat Cascade 2-0. She won the voting for April 26-May 2 by claiming 799 of 2,885 (27.7%) votes.

Alexis Slater | Mariner | Softball

Slater, a junior, needed just three games to record 51 strikeouts as she helped the Marauders to a perfect 3-0 mark during the week. Slater’s most dominant performance came in a two-hit shutout against Lynnwood on April 21 when she struck out 21 batters. She won The Herald’s Athlete of the Week voting for April 19-25 by claiming 604 of 2,400 (25.2%) votes.

James Yoon | Jackson | Football

Yoon, a junior, drilled a 44-yard game-winning field goal as time expired to give the Timberwolves their first win since Oct. 26, 2018 with a 36-34 victory over Everett. He won The Herald’s Athlete of the Week poll for March 29-April 4 by claiming 613 of 2,136 (28.7%) votes.
