MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — The Stanwood volleyball team took to the road and earned its first Wesco 3A victory with a 3-0 sweep over Mountlake Terrace Wednesday night.

The Spartans won a highly contested first set 28-26 and used the momentum to take the next two sets, 25-13, 25-21, and improve to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in league play.

“We were still searching for a league win so to get a first set on the road against somebody who has been playing pretty well is a big deal,” Stanwood head coach Erik Titus said.

Using their momentum from the first set victory, the Spartans took an early 9-2 lead in the second set and never looked back on way to a 25-13 victory.

Once again in the third set a strong start boosted the Spartans to a 13-3 lead. Mountlake Terrace fought back but ultimately didn’t have enough, as Stanwood won the final set 25-21.

Krista Titus and Macaela Hansen led a balanced Stanwood attack, finishing with 16 and 13 digs respectively.

“It was a total team effort,” Titus said. “We didn’t have anyone outstanding in one area, but we really spread the wealth. … We played really well. I was pleased.”

Hansen also finished with six of the Spartans 14 service aces on the night, a key to Stanwood’s offensive attack, according to Titus.

“That’s probably every coaches first weapon,” Titus said. “A good serve can throw a team out of system and you can score off their mistakes.”

Ali Hitchcock finished with 19 digs and Alisha Clingan tallied seven kills for the Hawks, who fell to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in league play.
