Everett Rowing Association alum Evan Olson wins Olympic bronze

VAIRES-SUR-MARNE, France — Evan Olson is coming home with a medal.

The Bothell native, who got his start in rowing with the Everett Rowing Association, earned a bronze medal as a member of the United States men’s eight Saturday at the Summer Olympic Games.

Olson is the second athlete with Snohomish County ties to earn a medal at this year’s Olympics. Glacier Peak High School graduate Matt King earned gold in swimming as a heat competitor for the U.S. men’s 400-meter freestyle relay team.

Olson, competing in his first Olympics, and the rest of the U.S. boat qualified for Saturday’s final by winning their heat last Monday, completing the 2,000-meter course in a time of 5 minutes, 29.94 seconds, beating the Netherlands by nearly two seconds.

Then in Saturday’s final the U.S. posted a time of 5:25.28, which was good for third place behind gold-medalist Great Britain (5:22.88) and silver-medalist Netherlands (5:23.92).

The rest of the U.S. team consisted of Clark Dean, Henry Hollingsworth, Nick Rusher, Christian Tabash, Chris Carlson, Peter Chatain, Pieter Quinton and Rielly Milne (cox).
