3A District 1 Championships

SHORELINE — The Shorewood boys dominated the distance races to outpace the field at the 3A district meet.

Max Billett, Elijah Graves, Tristan Crittenden and Kellen Roberts swept all available spots to next week’s state meet. Graves and Billett finished 1-2 in the 3,200, while places 5-8 were all taken by Shorewood runners Isaiah Schuelke, Crittenden, Brayden Yee and Noah Raupp. Roberts placed second behind Stanwood’s Ryan Khoury in the 800.

The top four placers in each event and additional competitors who meet the state-qualifying standard will head to the state meet, May 28-20 at Mount Tahoma H.S. in Tacoma.

The Stormays also flashed some speed and other skills at the district meet. Thomas Zyskowski won the 100 meters with a personal-best time of 10.97 seconds, and also qualified in the 200 with a third-place finish. Senior Jaden Marlow won the 110 hurdles, the pole vault and the long jump, while sophomore Tyler Marlow took first in the javelin.

Snohomish performed well in the field events to place second in the team standings. Jack Rotondo recorded the state’s second-best mark this year in the high jump, clearing a Class 3A-best 6 feet, 9 inches. He also qualified in the triple jump, which was won by Jakyle Williams of Meadowdale. Snohomish’s Grant Gunnerson won the discus.

The Stanwood girls won just one event at the meet, but used their overall depth to claim the team title.

The Spartans won the 800-meter relay, consisting of junior Victoria Nichols and sophomores Mackenzie Aasen, Georgia Lenz and Kyler Burke, combined for a time of 1 minute, 44.37 seconds to finish in front of Edmonds-Woodway. The three sophomores were joined by Aliana Coburn in the 1,600-meter relay for a second-place finish behind Edmonds-Woodway’s foursome of Isabella Offerman, Rayna Halloran, Brooklyn Maxey and Aliah Karl.

Aasen also qualified for state in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles. Coburn (800, 1,600), Lenz (400, 800) and Nichols (100 hurdles) also qualified for additional state events.

Mountlake Terrace’s Brynlee Dubiel won both hurdles events and helped the Hawks 400-meter relay team earn a state trip. Her relay teammate, Allison Mervin, won the long jump and the triple jump while finishing second in the 100.

Shorecrest’s Addison Phillips won the 1,600 and 3,200 races.

The foursome of Isaiah Owens, Adrian Bedolla, Michael Darling and Alieukama Badjie ran the state’s fastest time among all classifications in the 400-meter relay, topping its previous best in a blistering 41.07 seconds.

Each of the four qualified for at least one individual event for the state meet, May 28-30 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma. The top five finishers in each event, plus those who met the state meet standard, earned a state spot.
