Shots fired along US 2 eastbound prompts 4-hour closure in Everett

EVERETT — A suspected road rage shooting led Washington State Patrol to close U.S. 2 eastbound from Everett for more than four hours on Wednesday evening.

Around 6:30 p.m., troopers responded to gunfire near the southbound I-5 on ramp to U.S. 2 after an “unknown altercation” between drivers, according to a press release from Washington State Patrol.

No one was hurt, but a vehicle was damaged in the shooting, Trooper Kelsey Harding told The Daily Herald.

Troopers blocked U.S. 2 from Everett and I-5 to Homeacres Road until just before 11 p.m. to investigate the shooting, according to Washington State Department of Transportation traffic alerts. The closure backed up traffic entering U.S. 2 from both north and southbound I-5 exits.

Two drivers were believed to be entering eastbound U.S. 2 from I-5 south when one of the drivers shot at the other, a press release said.

Shots were fired again as the cars continued driving east on the U.S. 2 trestle before the suspected shooter left the scene, according to the WSP.

The second driver, a 38-year-old man from Oregon, stopped on U.S. 2 near Bickford Avenue to contact troopers, the release said.

Trooper Harding said witness reports lead investigators to suspect road rage. Detectives are actively investigating the shooting, she said.

Troopers did not provide a description of the vehicle connected to the gunfire.

At this time, WSP is not asking for any specific help from the public, Harding said.
