Construction to close Lowell-Snohomish River Road for a month

EVERETT — A road connecting Everett to Snohomish will be closed for about a month starting this week due to a construction project widening Highway 9, the Washington State Department of Transportation announced.

One lane of the Lowell-Snohomish River Road has been closed since late July, according to the department. It will be fully closed beginning later this week, likely on Thursday, to allow construction crews to install new girders and begin work in the water to build two new bridge piers in the Snohomish River, WSDOT wrote in an announcement last week.

The full road closure is expected to last 30 days, the department wrote. Traffic will be detoured to Lowell-Larimer road during the closure.

The construction work is part of a $142 million project to widen Highway 9, a road that connects the cities of Snohomish and Lake Stevens to areas in south Snohomish County and north King County. As part of the project, WSDOT is building an entirely new bridge across the Snohomish River and making repairs to an existing bridge, increasing the width of the road to two lanes in each direction.

The hope is that the widening project will ease traffic along the road, originally built as a two-lane highway in a rural area, which has now become a busy north-south route east of I-5 that often clogs up traffic in the small city of Snohomish. As part of the project, a newly built two-lane bridge will be used for southbound drivers while the existing bridge will be used for northbound traffic.

Construction on the widening project is expected to be complete in 2028.
