Mercedes AMG C 63 S E Performance Delivers Formula 1 Speed, Power And Control

671 HP, 3.3 Seconds 0-To-60 MPH, And 155 MPH Top Speed

I never thought I’d see the day: A four-cylinder gas/hybrid engine that generates 671 horsepower.

The 2024 Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E sedan takes performance hybrid technology derived directly from Formula 1 and delivers it to your driveway. And it also includes a plug-in, all-electric option.

A two-speed electric motor positioned on the rear axle supports the most powerful series production four-cylinder in the world, a handcrafted AMG 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that is mounted longitudinally at the front. Power delivery and torque build-up occur spontaneously and without delay: as in Formula 1, the electric support of the exhaust gas turbocharger eliminates the turbo lag of the combustion engine, while the electric motor at the rear axle pushes powerfully from a standstill.

The 4MATIC transmission includes fully variable all-wheel drive and active rear axle steering, with a “drift mode” option and adjustable exhaust notes, inducing a state of nirvana for the driver.

The integrated AMG dynamic control system is also standard. It influences the control strategies of ESP (Electronic Stability Program), all-wheel drive system and the electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential. This enhances stabilizing functions with interventions to add agility to the steering characteristics. When cornering at speed, for example, brief braking intervention at the inner rear wheel generates a defined yawing moment around the vertical axis for responsive and precise turn-in.

That all adds up to power, speed and control. The combination delivers 752 lb.-ft. of torque, a 0-to-60 miles per hour time of 3.3 seconds, and an electronically controlled top-speed of 155 miles per hour. You can almost envision you’re Max Verstappen, shredding the streets of Monaco.

The C 63 S E certainly looks the part as well. A new distinguishing feature exclusive to the model is a narrow air outlet in the center of the hood that transitions into two power domes. A black AMG emblem replaces the Mercedes star with laurel wreath on the hood. Other enhancements include a radiator grille with vertical struts and front fascia with a “jet- wing” design.

Matching side skirts, rear fascia with large diffuser, as well as two grooved trapezoidal twin tailpipe trims round out the design. Exclusive details at the rear include a special airflow breakaway edge on the trunk lid, integrated charging port door, and 20-inch alloy, 10-spoke wheels.

AMG power heated sports seats with special upholstery and distinctive stitching pattern add to the car’s refinement. With seating for up to five adults, passengers benefit from a panorama roof and heat and noise-insulating acoustic glass. The trunk is somewhat “hybrid compromised.” I had to drop the split/fold rear seat to finagle enough space for three golf bags and three passengers.

Creature comforts are almost limitless. The luxury sedan is equipped with a Burmester surround sound system, renowned for its impeccable audio quality and immersive soundstage. Other highlights include an 11.9-inch center touchscreen display to manipulate almost all systems, a 12.3-inch digital instrument display, and navigation. Voice the words “Hey Mercedes” with virtually any command, and the C 63 S E genie delivers your wish.

Safety technology, as one might expect, is also over-the-top. Safety and driver-assistance features are highlighted by automated braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control with a lane-centering feature.
