What keeps us healthy, happy and engaged doesn’t change as we age, but how we achieve them can.

In Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, for example, the basic essentials of food, shelter and safety form the foundation of the pyramid. Next come the things we need to give us a sense of belonging and love, such as community and relationships, and once those are secured, we can strive for the top – esteem and self-actualization.

Both esteem – respect for yourself and others – and self-actualization – realizing your full potential – are achievable when the basic levels are met, and make life more fulfilling and enjoyable.

When it comes to retirement living, just about every community is able to cover the foundation, but for residents to reach the pinnacle, they need to do more, explains Sue Rowell, Community Relations Director at Quail Park of Lynnwood.

Reach for the top, with the tools to achieve it

“At Quail Park, we approach this quest for the top by considering with our residents how they might achieve their goals, and what tools we can provide to help,” Rowell explains.

For someone to feel respect in a senior living residence, for example, residents need to be proud of their home and want it to succeed. This feeling comes from all the people living and working in the community, including residents, employees, families and their supporters.

“Everyone in our Quail Park family enjoys many opportunities to come together to help others in the community, such as the local food bank, the Alzheimer’s Association, Toys for Tots, Soap for Hope and more,” Rowell says. “And here at home, opportunities abound to work with neighbors on various committees that support areas such as safety, activities, dining and hospitality.”

Self-actualization, the peak of the hierarchy, comes when we feel fulfilled. We’re pursuing our passions for travel, learning, spending time with loved ones – whatever makes us feel happy and content.

“So we ask, what will help you be fulfilled?” Rowell says.

For many residents, the answer is found in enrichment opportunities found throughout Quail Park – arts and entertainment to feed the soul, fitness and wellness programs to boost the body, and lifelong learning to engage the mind.

By nourishing body, soul and mind, the pinnacle is reached.
