SPOKANE — The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office is recommending that charges of vehicular homicide be filed for a crash that killed two University High School students last month.

Spokane County prosecutors will decide if 16-year-old Preston Maher will be charged in the case.

Maher has been identified as the driver of a car that crashed into a tree on Oct. 5, killing 16-year-olds Josie Freier and McKenzie Mott.

Maher was treated for injuries and released from a hospital.

The felony charge of vehicular homicide carries a maximum sentence of life in prison for offenders tried as adults.
