SULTAN — Sheriff’s deputies shot a Sultan man allegedly armed with a knife Sunday, wounding him, and also killed the man’s dog, according to an initial account of the incident released early Monday.
Around 6:45 p.m., Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a man, 44, armed with a knife at the intersection of 2nd Street and Cedar Avenue in Sultan, according to the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team. The team, also known as SMART, is a task force of detectives that investigates police use of force.
The man was reportedly threatening people with a knife, SMART spokesperson Nathan Fabia said.
There was an “altercation” between the man and another man at the scene. Deputies gave verbal commands to the 44-year-old man and he didn’t comply, according to the report. After a “physical struggle” deputies shot the man.
According to the SMART press release, the man was “shot and wounded.” Fabia confirmed deputies shot the man, but it was unclear how many opened fire.
The man’s dog came out of his house. Deputies shot and killed the dog, the investigative team reported. Police did not release any further information about the pet.
The wounded man was taken to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett.
It remained an active investigation Monday. According to state code, the investigative team is required to update the public once per week.
