EVERETT — The yearlong closure of the Edgewater Bridge, the main connection between Everett and Mukilteo, will now start in early November.
The approximately $34 million project will take around a year to complete and Mukilteo Boulevard will be closed during that time. Funding is coming from a mix of local and federal funds.
The project has been delayed several times, including by the pandemic and an environmental review. After initially being looked at as a 2022 project, the closure was delayed to summer 2023. But an error in the bidding process delayed the work last year, pushing it to mid-2024.
Work on the project has officially begun, Everett Public Works spokesperson Kathleen Baxter wrote in an email Tuesday.
“We are waiting until November to close the bridge because of some long lead procurement items, and the contractor has to design and fabricate some items, which is made out of steel. That has a long fabrication time,” Baxter wrote. “There is no need to close road until that’s ready.”
About 6,000 vehicles each day cross the bridge just down the road from Edgewater Park. The park will be renovated once bridge construction is finished. Traffic will be mostly detoured along Glenwood Avenue, Merrill Creek Parkway, Highway 525 and Highway 526.
The new bridge will have 12-foot travel lanes, as well as bike lanes and sidewalks on each side.
For ferry-goers, Mukilteo Speedway will be the main route to the terminal. Bus routes should not be impacted, as neither Community Transit nor Everett Transit use the bridge on their routes.
Construction schedules are subject to change, the city of Everett noted in a press release.
