OLYMPIA — Democratic state Rep. Strom Peterson, of Edmonds, broke state election laws by not properly reporting contributions and expenditures for his 2016 re-election campaign, according to a civil complaint filed by state Attorney General Bob Ferguson.
The complaint, filed April 7 in Thurston County, alleges Peterson filed his candidate registration form 59 days late and failed to provide a detailed description of $3,255.97 in expenses, including the vendors used by his campaign consultant.
The lawmaker is alleged to have not disclosed over $2,048 in campaign debt, and failed to timely disclose at least $13,522 in expenditures and in-kind contributions. The late disclosures were between six and 31 days late, and primarily related to post-election surplus fund transfers, according to a press release from the Attorney General’s Office.
“We may have missed some dates. My treasurer and I are looking into it now,” Peterson said Monday. “If we did, the attorney general is right to make the complaint and we will take the proper steps to make it right.”
