Everett teen arrested in stabbing death

EVERETT – A 15-year-old Everett boy has arrested Friday in connection with a fatal stabbing at an Everett apartment earlier this week.

The teen was booked into the Denney Juvenile Justice Center in Everett for investigation of first-degree murder, Everett police Sgt. Boyd Bryant said.

He declined to discuss the arrest, saying only that more details should be available when the teen makes a first appearance in juvenile court early next week.

“The investigation is continuing,” he said.

Zachary L. Whittekiend, 24, died from a stab wound to the torso Wednesday after he and some other people scuffled at a south Everett apartment, court papers show. The argument apparently was over money.

No charges have been filed.

Man seriously injured in crash: A two-car accident Friday morning left an Edmonds man in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The 78-year-old man was driving a white Toyota Corolla that collided with a Chevy Suburban in the intersection, said Mountlake Terrace police Sgt. Mark Connor.

It happened at about 10 a.m. at 236th Street W. and 56th Ave. W., Connor said.

The other driver, a 43-year-old Lynnwood woman, was unhurt.

Car prowlers strike: The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office is reminding bus riders to lock their vehicles after a rash of car prowls occurred at two Everett park and ride lots.

Someone broke into several vehicles Thursday at the Mariner and McCollum park and ride lots, both of which are on 128th Street south of Everett. One car was stolen and several more cars had contents stolen. Four cars sustained damage to their ignitions.

Police remind riders to always lock their vehicles, roll up the windows and don’t leave valuables in cars, especially visible from outside. It’s also recommended not to leave cars parked in the park and ride lots overnight.

New trial set for ex-cult members: A Sept. 7 trial has been scheduled for two former members of a violent religious sect who claim they killed a Mountlake Terrace man on God’s orders.

Christopher Turgeon, 37, and Blaine Applin, 30, are charged with first-degree murder in the 1998 shooting death of Dan Jess. The pair went on trial for the killing in May, but a mistrial was declared after jurors deadlocked 11-1, with a majority voting to convict.

Turgeon, Applin and Jess were all members of a group founded by Turgeon called The Gatekeepers. The defendant’s lawyers argued they were innocent of Jess’ killing by reason of insanity.
