Man killed trying to cross I-5

STANWOOD — A 35-year-old Stanwood man died Sunday after being hit by several vehicles while running across I-5.

Brian Cooper tried to run across the southbound lanes around 6 p.m., about 8 miles northeast of Stanwood, the Washington State Patrol said.

None of the drivers were injured.

Fire engine for sale

The Darrington fire district has a fire engine and hovercraft posted as surplus. The 1984 Ford engine has a minimum bid of $6,000. The 2009 hovercraft does not run and would be used for parts. Minimum bid is $250 and includes trailer.

Written bids must be sent to Fire Station 39 or P.O. Box 1238 Darrington, WA 98241. Mark the envelope as “Late 2018 Surplus Sale.”

The deadline is 4 p.m. Jan. 14. Viewings are available with appointment.

Recycle Christmas trees at EvCC this month

Everett Community College is recycling Christmas trees for free Jan. 2-31.

Trees can be dropped off between 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. weekdays. Trees must be free of decorations, tinsel and other nonbiodegradable materials. No flocked trees. The college is at 2000 Tower St. Drop off trees in the marked area in parking lot F.

The college has been recycling holiday trees since 2009. Last year, more than 200 trees were turned into wood chips to use for campus flowerbeds and mulch.

Learn to square dance

Beginner square dance lessons start 7:30 p.m. Jan. 8, at Horseshoe Grange, 16424 Broadway Ave., Snohomish. The weekly lessons are for adults and kids 12 and olfer. No partner needed. The Jan. 8 lesson is free, then $7 per week.

Seminar for those with memory loss

The Alzheimer Association Washington State Chapter is hosting a seminar for people who have mild memory loss, from 9 a.m. until noon Jan. 8 in Everett.

Those who attend can expect to learn about the basics of dementia and coping strategies, and may get help planning the next steps. The event is at Hope Church at Silver Lake, 11329 23rd Drive SE. Registration is required.

Make blankets for kids

The Binky Patrol, a group of quilters, knitters and crocheters who make “binkies” for youth in traumatic situations, as well as quilts and blankets for seniors, seeks volunteers and donations of fabric, yarn or thread. The group meets next on Jan. 6 (first Sunday, second Sunday if a holiday) in Marysville.

Project Linus also makes quilts and blankets to donate to Snohomish County kids who have experienced traumatic life events. The next Project Linus event is set for 12:30-2:30 p.m. Jan. 8 (second Tuesday) at the Carl Gipson Senior Center of Everett, 3025 Lombard Ave. Materials and equipment are provided. Bring a sewing machine if you have one.
