LYNNWOOD — A toddler was seriously injured Tuesday night after falling from an open window at a townhouse in Lynnwood, fire officials said.
Around 8:30 p.m., South County firefighters responded to the home in the 19200 block of Damson Road. The screen on the open window appeared to have given way, and the 3-year-old boy fell two stories onto the pavement.
Paramedics took the boy to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
As temperatures warm in the summer months, the danger of children falling out of windows remains high. In 2021, 22 children reportedly fell out of windows, setting a record for the county.
South County Fire offered tips to prevent children from falling out of windows:
• Adult supervision is important, because unattended children run the greatest risk of falls and injuries, and screens can easily give way under a toddler’s weight.
• For children who like to crawl and climb, move chairs, cribs and other furniture away from windows.
• Install window locks or guards to prevent windows from opening more than 4 inches. Parents can order a free window lock from Snohomish County Safe Kids. Window locks and guards can also be purchased at local hardware stores and online.
