PORT ANGELES — A Port Angeles man has been sentenced to nearly 35 years in prison for kidnapping his ex-girlfriend and killing her boyfriend in Port Angeles.
The Peninsula Daily News said Gary Borneman was sentenced Wednesday in Clallam County Superior Court for murdering Jerry Howell and kidnapping of Rebecca Messinger.
Judge Christopher Melly said he imposed a longer sentence than prosecutors and the defense lawyer had suggested because Borneman interrupted Messinger when she made her statement to the court and because Borneman claimed to be a victim of Howell’s assaults.
Police say Borneman kidnapped Messinger on Oct. 7. He took her to the home she shared with Howell, tied her to the driver’s seat and went into the home where he fatally shot Howell.
Messinger managed to escape and called police while hiding in the nearby bushes.
