SNOHOMISH — A correctional officer at the Monroe prison was killed in a drive-by shooting Thursday night northeast of Snohomish, authorities said.

Around 7:45 p.m., deputies responded to reports of a drive-by shooting in the 1600 block of South Machias Road, according to the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office. At the scene, deputies found a man in his 30s deceased.

As of Friday morning, police had made no arrests in the shooting.

The sheriff’s office believed the shooter fled in a car northbound on South Machias Road. The make and model of the vehicle was unclear. No details were released about what led up to the shooting.

The state Department of Corrections confirmed the deceased worked at the Monroe Correctional Complex for about 1½ years. A spokesperson declined to give his name because it hadn’t been released yet by local authorities.

The deceased will be identified by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The Major Crimes Unit asked the public for help finding witnesses or surveillance footage.
