Frank Wagner teacher named district’s best
Rachel Sullivan, kindergarten teacher at Frank Wagner Elementary School, was selected as the Monroe School District’s 2015 Teacher of the Year. The Monroe-Sultan Masonic Lodge sponsors the annual award.
Many of Sullivan’s students started school not knowing any letter sounds or being able to count past 10. With her help, they ended the year at grade level, reading words and simple sentences, and adding and subtracting simple math problems.
“Kindergartners are insightful and eager to learn. I’m tired at the end of every day but I am amused and in awe of their rapid rate of growth,” Sullivan said.
Sullivan also helped at the district level to align report cards and teacher training to new state standards.
Tasty lesson in bread, giving
Students in the Edmonds School District recently teamed with King Arthur Flour for a hands-on baking project that ultimately benefited the Lynnwood Food Bank.
Students at seven schools in the district participated in the Learn Bake Share program. King Arthur representatives led assemblies at Seaview, Lynndale and Edmonds elementary schools in late March, demonstrating how to make braided bread, pizza dough, cinnamon rolls and more. Students in fourth, fifth and sixth grades were then sent home with kits to make two loaves of bread at home, one to eat and one to donate.
The company also provided materials for a similar program in Meadowdale, Edmonds-Woodway, Mountlake Terrace and Lynnwood high school culinary classes.
In the end, more than 475 loaves of bread made by students were delivered to the food bank.
