The League of Women Voters believes that climate change is an emergency facing our nation and planet and that government at every level must take aggressive action consistent with the best available climate science.
The Climate Commitment Act (CCA), passed by our Legislature in 2021, is a landmark bill that caps climate pollution and makes polluters pay for their emissions. The CCA went fully into effect on Jan. 1 and the Legislature is now debating how to spend the generated funds.
Please contact your state senator and representatives to request that they commit CCA funds as intended; for projects that fiercely defend our communities against climate impacts.
Some example proposals that could become realities include: $49 million to help communities that unfairly bear the brunt of pollution and to address the resulting health problems; $50 million to help families with their utility bills and to transition to more efficient heat pumps in their homes; $10 million to strengthen urban forests, tens of millions for various projects to sequester carbon in forests and fields. There are dozens more.
We must heal and protect this planet. In Washington, we have a once-in-a-generation chance to take climate action that could bring us closer to having cool salmon streams, healthy communities, thriving forests, clean air to breathe, and clean water to drink.
This is an historic opportunity, let’s not leave it on the table.
