Don’t tolerate slurs by players during Arlington-North Creek football game

I am writing to express my deep concern over the recent playoff football game between Arlington High School and North Creek High School, as reported in your coverage. While the story highlighted Arlington’s win, it left out a significant aspect of the game that has no place in high school sports: incidents of racial slurs directed at players from North Creek. North Creek athletes specifically asked an official why the game wasn’t stopped after the second warning and timeout to which the official responded by saying the crew were explicitly told not to stop or forfeit the game if this happened. I find that very interesting and believe many others will as well.

Racial slurs or any form of harassment are unacceptable in any setting, let alone in a high school environment where values of respect and sportsmanship should be paramount. Disturbingly, it seems that these incidents on the field went unaddressed by officials, with no apparent consequences for the offenders. Such inaction not only disrespects the affected players but also sends a message that this kind of behavior is tolerated or overlooked.

As a community, we must demand accountability those who oversee these games, from coaches to referees to school administrators. Ensuring a safe and fair environment for all players should be a top priority. It’s disheartening that these incidents could tarnish what should be a memorable experience for all the athletes involved.

I urge The Herald to follow up on this story, bring attention to the voices of those impacted, and hold accountable those who failed to intervene.
