I thought The Herald had quit running Rosemond column

Sometimes I begin to read an article in The Herald before identifying the name of the author. One column surprised me recently by its sarcasm and self-righteousness tone. Then I saw the author’s name. It seems The Herald has brought back John Rosemond’s “Living with Children” column to the detriment of our children and disservice to parents in Snohomish County. In the spring of 2018, letters in opposition to Mr. Rosemond’s philosophies were published, along with an op-ed from Tom Sebastian, CEO of Compass Health.

At that time, Mr. Sebastian stated that in his column, Rosemond, “asserted today’s children and teens face increased mental health and suicide issues because of what he claims is modern-day practices of poor parenting. At best, Rosemond’s article is a take on the well-worn “kids these days” trope. At its worst, it is a harmful expression of denial that has long persisted, keeping mental health issues and suicide in the shadows, and shaming and preventing individuals and families from getting the help they need.”

The Herald followed up by stating, “Editor’s note: Following recent and previous complaints, The Herald has discontinued publication of John Rosemond’s parenting column.” Nothing has changed with Mr. Rosemond’s parenting advice. I strongly suggest that The Herald discontinue Rosemond’s column and continue the variety of voices you have featured over the past two years.

Editor’s note: John Rosemond’s column was published recently as a substitute for another column that was not available. Rosemond’s column has not returned as a regular feature in The Herald.
