I thought Michael Gerson’s May 23 column in The Herald (“Complacency, ideology had part in deaths”) was unusually interesting. For instance, he writes: “Now imagine yourself part of a country seeking to help the U.S. with its covid-19 crisis.” An interesting what-if in itself, but keep reading. Gerson had many more interesting observations to make.
The sentence that really got to me was the last one in the ninth paragraph: “Is this country prepared for any [emphasis mine] crisis requiring communal action?” Good question.
A couple days before reading this column I happened to have watched (and do recommend) the 2015 documentary: “Winter On Fire : Ukraine’s Fight For Freedom.” The Ukrainians’ fierce unity, toughness, and ingenuity shown were remarkable and I was so impressed. Envious, too, I’m sorry to have to say.
