It seems that we as a people have been condemned to wander in the desert of dumbness for 40 years. More and more our school-aged children have been paying the price; not just in the faltering of the schools in their mission to truly educate, but also as direct targets of victimization by elements of the same aforesaid misguided people. If the conservatives really want to conserve something, how about allowing the children to be taught truly critical thinking skills?
One thing (although not the sole thing) that made me leave teaching was the instability caused by educational experimentation that made staff and students, both, mere guinea pigs a la mode. Being subjected to the whims of school boards, U.S. Circuit Courts of Appeal and parents begins to take a toll. If we could perhaps get the few responsible people, who still are in possession of their critical thinking skills, to have a constructive dialog on the issues of gun control, education and voting, then we might be able to get ourselves out of the wilderness in a few years, instead of several decades.
