Students should make call on school team names, mascots

Published 1:30 am Tuesday, February 16, 2021

Regarding the proposed legislation to prohibit the use of team names or mascots that tend to disparage Native Americans (“Schools need to retire Native American mascots,” The Herald, Feb. 11), I oppose such legislation and here is why.

Native Americans are more assertive than they used to be, and today’s other high school students are more culturally aware than we ever were. I think they can solve this problem among themselves without intervention by others. I think a mutually agreed solution would be more respected by all concerned than one imposed by an outside authority.
