There has been a lot of talk over the years of bringing back prayer in the public schools. I would like to add my opinion to this discussion. I believe that children should have the option of saying the Lord’s Prayer in school.
The Lord’s Prayer is non-denominational. There is nothing offensive about the prayer. It is not praying to Jesus but to the Father in Heaven. (God) We are children of God. Just because it came from Jesus somehow people get offended that it is a specific religion. Jesus was Jewish and followed Jewish Law. Jesus did not kill the Jews in concentration camps, he did not herd all the Indians onto the reservation, he did not enslave the blacks, and he was before his time in allowing women a voice in a man’s world. Don’t blame Jesus for those that twisted his teachings for their own political agenda. He will say, “I knew them not.”
Most mainline churches have apologized for the wrongs done through the centuries. They now know in our more enlightened age it was wrong and not of the teachings of Jesus. Over the years I have respected everybody’s religion but nobody wants to respect anything dealing with Jesus.
We will quote man and let others get up and say a prayer, but saying a prayer from Jesus would be promoting a certain religions. Most all religions respect and admire the teachings of Jesus and consider him, if nothing else, a great teacher. Why can’t we acknowledge him on the only public prayer he did say? He did say it was better to pray in private and not to be like the hypocrites who love to pray in public, but this is the one time he did teach a prayer to the masses.
It is my opinion that it is a universal prayer and would help this nation and our children. As always, this is just my opinion and thank God we live in a country that we will not get arrested or killed for giving an opinion.
