Arlington opens new stadium with big win

ARLINGTON — With the christening of a new stadium on the line, the Arlington Eagles didn’t let the home faithful down, registering a 42-7 Western Conference North Division victory over Monroe Friday night at John C. Larson Stadium.

"This was a great experience, we were honored to be there," said Arlington coach John Boitano.

Arlington (1-1 in league, 1-2 overall) put the clamps on this game early and often.

Brenton Bodewig was the first to score in the new stadium on a 3-yard run and Michael King returned a fumble 27 yards for a touchdown giving Arlington a 14-0 lead after one quarter.

Bodewig finished the game with 20 touches for 173 yards and three touchdowns.

"We scored early and it really helped our confidence," Boitano said. "We were nervous tonight."

Eagle quarterback Kenny Gunter added two touchdown passes, one in the second quarter and one in the third, on 6-for-11 passing, and Arlington saw its lead build to 28-0 by the end of the third quarter.

Monroe (0-2, 1-2) was paced by the 107 yards on 22 carries by Jeff Donaldson.

"This night was special, there must have been 2,500 fans here," Boitano said.

Kirton, who turned in his second-straight game with more than 200 yards rushing, scored on runs of 79 and 15 yards in the first half, and his 41-yarder gave Jackson breathing room early in the fourth quarter after the Thunderbirds closed to 21-19. Shorewood matched the Timberwolves touchdown for touchdown, including two on passes from Sean Tracey to Wade Gurnett, but a blocked extra point in the second quarter and a failed conversion attempt in the third quarter was the difference. Shorewood, led by Tracey’s 194 yards passing, fell to 0-2 in league play.
