Another U.S. call-up for Martinez

Mariner High School freshman Angel Martinez received another call-up to the U-15 U.S. boys national soccer team.

Martinez, a central defender who plays for the Seattle Sounders FC Academy, was one of 20 players selected for the team that competed at the UEFA Development Tournament last week in Sztum and Malbork, Poland. It was the third time Marinez was called up to the national squad.

The U.S. went 1-2 at the tournament, beating Iceland 2-1 before losing to both Poland and Russia on penalty kicks — the Poland game finished 3-3 and the Russia game finished 1-1. Martinez started in the games against Iceland and Russia.

Casto’s strong fall continues

Snohomish High School graduate Ethan Casto, now a senior on the Western Washington University men’s golf team, ws named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week for the third time this fall.

Casto tied for third at the Otter Invitational last Monday and Tuesday at Black Horse Golf Course in Seaside, California, shooting a three-round score of 2-under par 214. Casto has placed in the top 10 in all four tournaments Western has played this fall.

Baker fourth at Skate Canada

Kamiak High School graduate Jean-Luc Baker and his partner Kaitlin Hawyek finished just off the podium in the ice dance competition at Skate Canada over the weekend in Kelowna, British Columbia. Skate Canada is one of the six events that make up the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating.

Baker and Hawayek finished with a score of 194.77 to place fourth, which was less than a point from earning the bronze medal.

Baker’s and Hawayek’s next Grand Prix event is the Cup of China on Nov. 8-10 in Chonqing, China, where they hope to earn enough points to qualify for the Grand Prix Final for the second straight season.
