Community Roundup: Sky Valley team claims district title

The Sky Valley Rebels Senior League All-Star baseball team defeated Stilly Valley 11-6 on July 1 at Lake Stevens Community Park to capture the District 1 championship.
The Sky Valley team is made up of 16-year-old players from Monroe and Sultan.
With the win, the Rebels advance to the state tournament, scheduled for July 13-18 at the Harmony Sports Complex in Vancouver.
“I’m very proud of these young men,” Rebels coach Scott Newsome said. “I’ve been told on numerous occasions by opposing teams and coaches that they have never seen a classier team. As a manager, there is no bigger compliment and they represent our Sky Valley community very well.”
The Rebels’ roster includes Tyler Koontz, Slate York, Tristan Newsome, Wade Baldwin, Jake Job, Noah Jacobsen, Shawn Smith, Cooper Martin, Tristan Witham, Matt Baller, Dakota Neuman and Joey Crawford.

Three Reign players honored
Three members of the Everett Reign have been named to the Women’s Football Alliance’s American Conference All-America teams.
Offensive guard Joleen Sims and offensive tackle Jordan Rice made the first team. Center LeAnn Layman was named to the second team.
The WFA All-Star game will be played Aug. 3 in San Diego, prior to the league championship contest. The latter game will be televised on ESPN3.
The Reign recently completed their first season in the WFA, a 36-team tackle football league. The Reign posted a 5-7 record, including a 3-5 mark in league play.
Rowers bring home medals
Four members of the Lake Stevens-based U.S. North Cascades Crew rowing club brought home medals from the Northwest Masters Regionals, held June 21-23 at Vancouver Lake. The event drew 47 rowing clubs from eight states and Canada.
Jen Huffman and Wendy Clark won a gold medal in the women’s 2XB division and a bronze medal in the women’s 2XA. Huffman also collected a gold medal in the women’s 1XC class and a silver medal in the women’s 1XA.
The other medalists for the North Cascades Crew included Kat Runyon (bronze in the women’s 1XF) and Ben McIsaac (silver in the lightweight AA D1X).
Bruin wrestlers shine
The Cascade High School wrestling team placed third last month in the team tournament that was part of a five-day camp at North Idaho College in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
The Bruins wrestled 12 dual meets in three days against some of the top high school teams from Washington, Oregon and Idaho, Cascade coach Brooklyn Obregon said.
“This is the best … Cascade HS has ever placed at this tournament and it’s such an incredible achievement considering the level of competition,” he said in an e-mail.
The team tournament was followed by an individual competition and the Bruins brought home two championships — Gino Obregon placed first at 145 pounds, and David Garcia won the 132-pound class.
Cascade’s Wyatt Larsen (138 pounds) and Juan Garcia (170) each placed third.
In all, the Cascade athletes each wrestled in 17 to 20 matches at the tournament, Brooklyn Obregon said.
