Edmonds School District delays spring games due to coronavirus

The district announces that all athletic events through April 12 are canceled in response to the outbreak.

The Edmonds School District has canceled all athletic events scheduled from Monday through April 12 in response to the novel coronavirus outbreak.

Superintendent Dr. Kristine McDuffy sent an email to school district families and staff Friday informing them of the decision, which also included the cancellation or postponement of any concerts, dances, plays or information nights scheduled between Monday and April 12.

Practices for all spring sports, which began March 1, are viewed by the District as “extensions of the school day” and will continue to be held.

Four Wesco 3A/2A high schools are affected — Edmonds-Woodway, Lynnwood, Meadowdale and Mountlake Terrace. A total of 183 events between the eight spring sports (baseball, boys/girls golf, boys soccer, boys/girls track & field, softball, girls tennis) will be canceled if the decision holds.

Broken down by sport, the decision would wipe out an average of nine of 20 scheduled baseball games, 1.5 of four boys golf matches, 8.5 of 16 boys soccer matches, four of 15 boys track meets, 3.5 of five girls golf matches, nine of 20 softball games, 6.5 of 14 girls tennis matches and four of 12 girls track meets.

Most of the canceled events are pre-conference games, but the four Edmonds School District boys soccer teams each see seven Wesco 3A/2A matches wiped out by the decision.

“We know how hard our students work and how much our community loves to enjoy their talents,” McDuffy wrote in the email. “However we feel this precaution is necessary to reduce possible exposure to our school communities.”

Additionally, the Marysville School District announced Friday that athletic competitions would be canceled or postponed until at least March 22. That would represent an average of two games per sport at both Marysville Pilchuck and Marysville Getchell High Schools. The Stanwood Camano School District has also canceled all athletic competitions until further notice. In both Marysville and Stanwood, athletic practices will continue to be held.

As of Friday, the Everett School District, Mukilteo School District, Snohomish School District, Shoreline School District, Arlington School District, Monroe School District, Lake Stevens School District have not announced the cancellation or postponement of games.
