Everett Rowing Association wins 4 golds at Masters regatta

The Everett Rowing Association came away from the Masters National Championship with a handful of gold.

Four ERA boats took home gold medals from the Masters National Championship, held Aug. 16-19 on Lake Merritt in Oakland, California. Masters rowing is for competitors aged 21 and older. Everett’s winners were:

■ The Men’s B (ages 36-42) 4x (sculls) team of Aaron Haack, Ben Tweedy, Brad Rogers and Clinton Seal.

■ The Mixed B 8+ (sweep) team of Hack, Tweedy, Rogers, Seal, Margaret Stewart, Laura Sutherland, Jessica Raab Holmgren, Jane Reynolds and Kimberly Rice-Narusch.

■ The Mixed B 4x team of Rabb Holmgren, Tweedy, Sutherland and Seal.

■ And the Mixed A (ages 27-35) 4x team of Haack, Raab Holmgren, Sutherland and Seal.

Snohomish sibling skaters represent U.S.

Kamden and Kayla Black, a brother-sister combination from Snohomish, represented the United States at the North American Series, a competition for novice figure skaters from the U.S. and Canada.

The Blacks competed at the Skate Ontario Summer Skate in Toronto on Aug. 17-20, one of three competitions in the series. Facing mostly older competition, they finished fifth in the Novice Pairs competition, achieving a score of 77.60.

The Blacks compete out of the Seattle Skating Club, which is based at Olympicview Arena in Mountlake Terrace. Kamden is a sophomore at Glacier Peak High School, Kayla is a sixth grader at Snohomish Parent Partnership. Their next major competition is the Northwest Pacific Regional Figure Skating Championships on Oct. 3-7 in Sherwood, Oregon.

Koppenberg second at Washington Mid-Amateur

Everett High School graduate Jake Koppenberg finished as the runner-up at the Washington State Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship golf tournament, which was held last Tuesday and Wednesday at the Rope Rider course at Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum.

Koppenberg, now a volunteer assistant coach at Western Washington University, shot a two-round score of 2-under 142, finishing two strokes behind the medalist, Reid Hatley of Hayden Lake, Idaho.

Alex Stamey of Mill Creek finished tied for third at even-par 144.

Mariner grad Billen earns Big Sky preseason honors

Mariner High School graduate Curtis Billen, now a senior long snapper on the Eastern Washington University football team, was named second-team preseason All-Big Sky Conference. Billen is in his fourth season as Eastern’s long snapper.

Everett CC’s Leonard joining WSU baseball

Everett Community College pitcher Owen Leonard has signed to play at Washington State for the 2018-19 season. Leonard, a right-hander who was a sophomore the past season, went 6-2 with a 1.79 ERA, walking 27 and striking out 82 in 80.1 innings as he earned second-team All-Northwest Athletic Conference North Region honors and helped the Trojans reach the NWAC Championship Tournament.
