Former third baseman Scott Brosius, a member of three World Series champions with the New York Yankees, is returning to Triple-A Tacoma as the Rainiers’ new hitting coach.
The Mariners confirmed Thursday that Brosius, 49, will replace Cory Snyder, whose contract was not renewed after spending the last five years in the organization.
Brosius batted .257 with 141 homers and 531 RBI in 1,146 games over 11 big-league seasons with Oakland (1991-97) and the Yankees (1998-2001). He was the World Series’ Most Valuable Player in 1998.
After concluding his career in 2001, Brosius spent 13 years as a coach at his alma mater, Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore.
Brosius was the Wildcats’ head coach from 2007-14 and guided them to the 2013 NCAA Division III national title. He was picked five times as the Northwest Conference coach of the year while compiling a 237-81 record.
The Mariners opted to retain Pat Listach as Tacoma’s manager for a second year but fired Snyder and pitching coach Jaime Navarro, who spent seven seasons with the organization. They have not yet replaced Navarro.
Brosius was born in Hillsboro, Ore., and attended Rex Putnam High School in Milwaukie, Ore., before playing collegiately at Linfield. He was picked by Oakland in the 20th round of the 1987 draft.
After a steady climb through the Oakland system, Brosius reached Tacoma, then an Athletics’ affiliate, late in 1990. He spent much of the 1991, 1992 and 1993 seasons in Tacoma.
