It’s official: Bedard re-signs with Mariners

Done deal. Erik Bedard is officially back with the Mariners. Here are segments from the news release from the Mariners:

Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President &General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik announced today the club has signed left-handed pitcher Erik Bedard to one-year contract for the 2010 season. The Mariners and Bedard have a mutual option on a 2011 contract.

Bedard, who will turn 31 on March 5, had season-ending surgery (performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum) on his left shoulder on Aug. 14, 2009. He is expected to be ready to pitch sometime this season.

“We think Erik is an important piece for us to add, ” said Zduriencik. “We’re confident he ‘ll be ready to pitch Major League games this season. We’ve carefully monitored his recovery from surgery and his rehabilitation process and are confident he’ll be a contributor to our 2010 campaign. We are looking forward to him returning and being a part of this organization as we move forward. “

“My first choice was to return to Seattle, so I’m very happy to get this done,” Bedard said. “I like the moves the team made this winter, and I’m looking forward to when I can get back on the mound and help them this year.’

To make room on the Mariners’ major league, 40-man roster, RHP Yusmeiro Petit has been designated for assignment. The Mariners now have 10 days to trade, release or outright Petit to the minors. Petit was acquired via a waiver claim from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Nov. 4, 2009.
