EUGENE — The Everett AquaSox pulled out to an early five-run lead, but couldn’t hold on in a 9-6 loss to the Eugene Emeralds to open a critical late-season series on Tuesday night at PK Park.
The loss, combined with Spokane’s 5-4 win over the Vancouver Canadians, dropped Everett to two full games behind the Indians and 1.5 games behind Eugene for a playoff spot. The AquaSox have 10 games remaining in the season.
In his first game since being promoted to Everett, 19-year-old shortstop Noelvi Marte went 2-for-4 with two runs batted. Batting fourth, Marte hit an RBI single in his first at-bat, and singled home another run in the seventh.
Cade Marlowe went 3-for-5 with a home run — hits 18th with the AquaSox and 24th overall on the season — and four runs batted in. Marlowe now has 100 total RBI combined between stints with Everett (60-49) and Modesto.
Armani Smith homered twice, and Sean Roby and Ismael Munguia also hit home runs for Eugene (62-48).
