Shorewood knocks off Monroe for its first victory of the season

SHORELINE — Dorian Lair rushed for 129 yards and a touchdown and also kicked a 33-yard field goal in the second quarter to lead Shorewood to a 17-14 victory over Monroe in a non-conference football game.

It was Shorewood’s first win of the season.

Shorewood fell behind early, but took a 10-7 lead in the third quarter off Lair’s 11-yard touchdown run. Demarcus Taylor sealed the victory for Thunderbirds with 4:13 left in the fourth by hauling in a 7-yard pass from Jon O’Hendricks for a 17-7 advantage.

Monroe starting quarterback Bryan Sonneveldt finished 15-for-28 for 204 yards, and hit Josh Macke for an 18-yard touchdown with 25 seconds left in the game for the game’s final score of the night.

Monroe’s Austin Bray scored on a 35-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to give the Bearcats an early 7-0 lead.

Everett 20, Sedro-Woolley 14: At Sedro-Woolley, Brent Swezey scored two touchdowns in Everett’s non-conference victory over Sedro-Woolley. After Everett fell behind 14-7 in the third quarter, Swezey scored on a 17-yard pass from Brice Herrick (6-for-11, 50 yards) to tie the game. A 6-yard run by Swezey gave the Seagulls the lead with 4:24 remaining in the game. Derek Garcia and Cody Pohren scored touchdowns for Sedro-Woolley.

“They ran the ball well,” Jackson coach Joel Vincent said, “but the key to the game was the six turnovers.”

M-P’s Andy Abadam set the tone for the night by returning the opening kickoff for a score. M-P running back Ben Hagar rushed 19 times for 149 yards.

Lake Stevens 32, Shorecrest 13: At Shoreline, Lake Stevens quarterback Nick Baker was 6-of-7 passing for 82 yards and two touchdowns to help the Vikings to the season-ending, non-league victory. Dustin Adams had three receptions for 109 yards and two touchdowns for the Vikings.
