The secret to the success of Seahawks’ Wilson: It’s the water

RENTON — Russell Wilson wants you to know the secret to his latest on-field success.

“Recovery Water.”

The Seahawks quarterback/pop-culture man is on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine’s latest issue.

Beyond more details on his relationship with singer Ciara, beyond a beefcake-y photo of him sprawled on a couch, the long article — clearly written before he signed his $87.6 million contract extension in early August to become the NFL’s second-high paid quarterback — includes Wilson describing how he bounced back so quickly from a vicious, open-field hit by Green Bay’s Clay Matthews on the return of an interception he threw in January’s NFC championship game.

Wilson didn’t miss a play. He led Seattle’s rally from 16-0 down midway through the third quarter to a 28-22 victory in overtime. Wilson stayed clear-headed after Matthews’ hit enough to call the audible that resulted in his touchdown pass to Jermaine Kearse that sent the Seahawks to their second consecutive Super Bowl.

“I banged my head during the Packers game in the playoffs, and the next day I was fine,” Wilson tells RS. “It was the water.”

“The water” is the $3-per-bottle Reliant “Recovery Water,” a Tacoma-based venture in which Wilson is an investor.

It has, according to Wilson and the Rolling Stone article, “nanobubbles and electrolytes that purportedly helps people recover quickly from workouts and, according to Wilson, injury. He mentions a teammate whose knee healed miraculously …”

Within a few hours Wednesday #nanobubbles was a trending hashtag on social media.

In the RS story, Wilson’s agent Mark Rodgers is quoted as interjecting: “Well, we’re not saying we have real medical proof.”

“But,” the article reads, “Wilson shakes his head, energized by the subject. He speaks with an evangelist’s zeal.

“’I know it works.’ His eyes brighten. ‘Soon you’re going to be able to order it straight from Amazon.’”

After practice Wednesday before Saturday’s third exhibition game at San Diego, Wilson tweeted: “I believe @Recovery_Water helped prevent me from getting a concussion based on a bad hit! #NanoBubbles”

Wilson is scheduled to talk to the local (football) media Thursday following practice. The conversation may not be all about football.

Extra point

The team released QB Jake Waters one week after signing him, a further indication Tarvaris Jackson will return next week from a high-ankle sprain. … Seattle signed undrafted rookie WR Deontay Greenberry. Greenberry, from the University of Houston, was signed by Dallas in May and released last week.
