Transgender participation among proposed WIAA amendments

Washington high school sports governing body to vote on 16 rule changes in April.

RENTON — The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association will vote on 16 proposed amendments to the WIAA Handbook in April of 2025 that could take effect as soon as the 2025-26 season if passed. The WIAA Representative Assembly will discuss and finalize the the language of each proposed amendment during its Winter Coalition on Jan. 27, 2025, according to Tuesday’s WIAA press release.

Each amendment requires a 60 percent approval rate to pass. For 2024, 14 of 27 amendments passed.

Amendments proposed for 2025 include:

• A requirement that participation in girls sports be limited to students who were assigned female at birth — submitted by the following school districts: Lynden, Blaine, Brewster, Cashmere, Colville, Grand Coulee Dam, Lake Chelan, Lynden Christian School, Mansfield, Mead, Okanogan, Omak, Oroville and Tonasket.

• Athletic programs be offered separately for boys and girls, along with an open division for all, including transgender students — submitted by the following school districts: Eastmont, Cashmere, Colville, Lynden, Mead, Moses Lake and Thorp.

• The addition of girls flag football as a high school sport — submitted by the following schools and districts: Redmond, Eastmont, Everett, Gig Harbor H.S., Lake Washington H.S., Peninsula, and Tacoma.

• A 25 percent increase in fees charged by the WIAA to high schools for both the 2025-26 and 2026 school years — submitted by the WIAA Executive Board.

• A loosening of transfer policies in regard to athletic eligibility — submitted by the WIAA Excutive Board.
