LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Doug Wrenn hit a short jumper with six seconds left to lift the Washington Huskies to a 75-74 win Saturday night over New Mexico State.
The Aggies had a chance to win, but Wrenn disrupted an Eric Channing shot, which went out of bounds. David Dixon inbounded the ball, but it was stolen by Chris Jackson at halfcourt. Jackson’s shot fell short as time expired.
Wrenn had a game-high 19 points. James Moore led the Aggies with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Will Morris had 17 as well.
The Aggies (4-3) went ahead 74-73 with 0:13 left when Channing hit a baseline floater. But the Huskies (6-2) took the ball the length of the court, and guard Curtis Allen penetrated to Wrenn’s side. Wrenn caught the ball, took a dribble, and hit the 7-foot jumper.
The Aggies had opened the second half with an 8-0 run, led by freshman Jason Fontenet. He scored 6 straight points, all on free throws, to give the Aggies a 40-37 lead with 16:23 remaining. Washington retaliated with a 6-0 run to take the lead back, 43-40. The teams traded leads until the 13-second mark, when Channing hit the floater.
Washington closed the first half with a 12-4 run and led 37-32. New Mexico State had led for much of the half, but an offensive foul by James Felder gave the Huskies a chance to go ahead with free throws. Erroll Knight hit one of two, and Washington led 25-24 with 5:41 remaining.
The Aggies have lost three of their last four games by a combined 4 points.
