Readers’ Theater presents ‘Laddie’

Published 11:30 am Monday, March 3, 2008

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council’s Readers’ Theater series continues Monday, April 24 with a staging of Robin McCall’s play “Laddie.”

An adaptation of the original story by Gene Stratton-Porter, “Laddie” is the tale of two families set in the early 1900s. One family’s members stick together and believe in one another through thick and thin, while the other’s decidedly dysfunctional father creates trouble for his family because of his poor judgment. There are two young people who are in love before either of them know it, and a little sister who adores her older brother as little sisters are wont to do. All in all, this is a story that will provide a lively evening, and is a good family piece with lots of laughter and intrigue.

McCall, a long-time member of The Gilbert and Sullivan Society, has been working for a number of years on this adaptation of the novel by Stratton-Porter, originally published in 1913. A performing artist since the age of four, McCall has written screenplays, children’s books and poetry. She will be remembered by Readers’ Theater audiences for her screenplay, “Gwen and the Green Night,” which was staged for the Arts Council’s Readers’ Theater Series in 2004.

For the last three years Readers’ Theater has served as a resource to bring together actors, readers and playwrights in an entertaining and educational environment. With a focus on presenting new works, the program allows writers to learn about their own work by seeing and hearing it aloud in a dramatic reading, while providing a setting in which participants experience opportunities to develop their craft.

“Laddie” will be staged at 7 p.m. in the Aurora Room at the Shoreline Center, located at 18560 1st Avenue NE in Shoreline. Admission is free. Call 206-417-4645 for more information or visit www.shorelinearts.net.
