Career accomplishments: Born in New Zealand, Thayer has spent her lifetime fulfilling adventurous goals. She was the United States luge champion in 1975, and in 1988 (at age 50) she became the first woman to walk solo to the magnetic North Polo. She followed that accomplishment by becoming the first woman to walk across the Sahara Desert in 1996 and the first woman to walk across the Gobi Desert in 2001.
