EVERETT — The voyage was short and oh so costly.
Police say a tugboat was quietly commandeered by a naked man but it didn’t get far.
It was spotted adrift at an Everett marina early Tuesday morning. The man, 25, was seen walking around in the wheelhouse.
Around 3 a.m., Everett police were called to Dunlap Towing at 2702 Federal Ave., near Naval Station Everett. The tugboat, apparently untied from the dock, was bouncing against rocks in the marina.
Officers boarded the vessel and detained the man without incident. A police report noted a substantial amount of damage had been done to the inside of the boat, including broken emergency lights, cut wires and ax marks in a door.
A marina captain estimated that $40,000 in damage had been done to the interior alone. A diver would have to determine the extent of damage to the outside of the boat.
Staff said they didn’t recognize the suspect, and couldn’t say how he ended up at the marina. An address in the police report listed him as last living in Port Angeles.
In 2015, he was convicted of second-degree assault in King County. According to those charging documents, he was fighting with his ex-girlfriend at her apartment in Shoreline when he grabbed her by the neck, forced her head onto the counter and stabbed the countertop several times with a knife, just inches from her face.
Court records indicate he had been living in Oregon during that time.
The man was booked into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of first-degree theft, malicious mischief and vehicle prowling.
