Bilal Hasan has conquered the Americas.
The Kamiak High School junior claimed gold at the 2017 Pan American Junior and Cadet Taekwondo Championships, held Aug. 28-31 in San Jose, Costa Rica.
Competing in the junior flyweight division (ages 15-17, 48 kilograms), Hasan took first place, defeating Argentina’s Nicolas Matias Hoyos in the championship match.
Hasan’s gold at the Pan American Championships followed his winning gold at the U.S. Open in Las Vegas, Nevada, in February and at the Spanish Open in Alicante, Spain, in March. Hasan’s exploits have propelled his ranking to No. 2 in the world in his division.
Cornett headed to four-ball nationals
Mill Creek’s Kyle Cornett is heading to the 2018 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championships after earning medalist honors at the sectional qualifier last Wednesday.
Cornett, a Jackson High School alum who graduated from Seattle University in the spring, teamed with Bellevue’s Patrick Sato to shoot an 8-under par 64 — in four-ball the best score between the two teammates is counted on each hole — at The Home Course in DuPont. Cornett and Sato finished two strokes ahead of the field.
Cornett and Sato advanced to the national championships, which are May 19-23 at Jupiter Hills Club in Tequesta, Florida.
Local climbers compete at worlds
Marysville’s Sidney Trinidad finished 18th out of 34 competitors in the female junior (ages 17-19) combined division at the International Federation of Sport Climbing Youth World Championships, which concluded Sunday in Innsbruck, Austria.
Trinidad placed 22nd out of 51 in female junior speed, tied for 22nd out of 59 in female junior lead, and tied for 27th out of 55 in female junior bouldering. Only competitors who qualified in all three disciplines were eligible in the combined division.
Everett’s Laili Couper tied for 67th out of 94 in female youth A (ages 16-17) bouldering.
