ARLINGTON — Highway 530 was shut down for nearly six hours Monday after a morning traffic crash and fuel spill near the Cicero Bridge northeast of Arlington.

A semi-truck and a pickup truck collided head-on at 9:55 a.m., causing the semi to catch fire and spill 50 gallons of diesel fuel on the roadway, the Washington State Patrol said.

Scott Case, a 33-year-old from Darrington, was seriously injured in the wreck. He was airlifted to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center where he was listed in satisfactory condition Monday night.

He was driving a 2001 Toyota Tacoma pickup.

The driver of the 1982 Mack semi-truck, a 58-year-old Stanwood man, was not hurt.

The semi-truck caught fire at the Cicero Bridge over the north fork of the Stillaguamish River.

Authorities were worried about the spilled fuel getting into the river below.

Arlington firefighters deployed absorbent materials to stop the fuel spill’s movement.

Another 25 gallons of fuel remained in the truck’s tank and was pumped out.

The highway was closed for about 5 1/2 hours Wednesday, according to the state police.

The accident occurred at milepost 28.
